The Hidden Infections That Could Be Draining Your Health

Previous root canal

What if the root of your chronic symptoms isn’t in your gut, your hormones, or even your mind… but in your mouth?

You’re Doing Everything Right… So Why Do You Still Feel Off?

You eat clean. You’ve cut sugar, tried supplements . . . maybe even seen functional medicine doctors. But you still feel tired, inflamed, or foggy.

Maybe you’ve even been told “everything looks fine.”

But what if something was missed?

In my practice, I meet people every day who are struggling with chronic symptoms their doctors can’t explain. And more often than you’d expect, we find the problem where no one else has looked: inside the mouth.

That’s right. Hidden infections in the mouth can quietly overload your immune system and impact your entire body. And the worst part? You usually can’t feel them.

Let’s talk about what these infections are, how they happen, and what you can do about them.

Meet the "Silent Saboteurs" in Your Mouth

You may think your teeth and gums are fine. You brush, you floss (most days!), and you see a dentist when you’re supposed to. But even then, some infections fly under the radar.

We call them “hidden infections” because they don’t always cause pain or visible symptoms. But they absolutely can:

  • Trigger chronic inflammation

  • Drain your energy

  • Disrupt your immune system

  • Worsen or even cause systemic issues

There are three main sources of hidden oral infections we look for at Total Care Dental:

1. Failing Root Canals

Root canals are meant to save infected or damaged teeth. But here’s the truth no one tells you:

Even a “successful” root canal leaves behind a dead tooth. That dead tissue becomes the perfect hiding place for bacteria. These bacteria release toxins called endotoxins that seep into the bone, the bloodstream, and eventually, the rest of your body.

I’ve looked at tens of thousands of root canals in my career, and when looked at with a Cone Beam CT scan, I rarely see one that hasn’t become re-infected.

And yet, they often look fine on a traditional x-ray. You need a 3D Cone Beam CT scan to see the real story

2. Cavitations (Unhealed Extraction Sites)

Cavitations are hollow, infected areas in the jawbone where teeth (especially wisdom teeth) were removed but never healed properly.

These hidden pockets of dying bone can harbor bacteria and toxins that disrupt everything from your energy to your immune system.

One of my patients, Stacey, suffered for years with fatigue and chronic health issues until we discovered cavitations in her jaw. After surgery to clean out the sites and remove a failing root canal, her energy returned almost overnight.

Her story is rare only because most people never get checked for cavitations. Standard dental exams don’t detect them. But at Total Care Dental, we do.

3. Periodontal (Gum) Infections

Gum disease is more common than you think. Nearly half of adults over 30 have it in some form. And even mild periodontal infection means your gums are inflamed and bacteria are entering your bloodstream every single day.

If you’ve been diagnosed with gingivitis or gum disease, or if your gums bleed when brushing, it could be part of a bigger picture. Left unchecked, it places an ongoing burden on your immune system—which affects everything from your heart to your hormones.

Why Most Dentists Don’t Catch These Problems

Traditional dentistry is focused on symptoms: pain, visible decay, or cavities.

But hidden infections don’t always hurt. You need advanced imaging, a trained eye, and a biological perspective to connect oral health to whole-body health.

At Total Care Dental, we use:

  • 3D Cone Beam CT imaging

  • Ozone therapy to safely disinfect

  • Biocompatible materials that won’t irritate your immune system

  • A whole-body approach to healing

Because your mouth is part of your body—and your health depends on both.

You Don’t Have to Keep Wondering What’s Wrong

If you’ve been searching for answers, and still feel like something’s “off,” it might be time to look in your mouth.

We see patients every week who discover that their chronic symptoms were being driven by hidden infections they never knew existed.

Once the source is found and treated, the body can finally begin to heal.

If you’re ready to finally get answers, schedule your New Patient Exam at Total Care Dental. We’ll take a deep look at your oral health, your history, and your overall wellness—and help you uncover what others may have missed.

Your body is wise. Let’s help it heal.
