If your levels of Vitamin D are low, you will be more susceptible to infection, disease and auto-immune problems.

With all that is going on in our world right now, your immune system needs to be at its strongest. 

Making sure you have adequate levels of Vitamin D is one of the easiest and most effective ways to “toughen up” your immune system this Fall.

Why We Are Deficient

Most of the Vitamin D we get comes from being in the sun, but it’s really hard to get enough from the sun in our world today. 

With pollution, too much time indoors, covering up, and sunscreen, we are ALL not getting enough Vitamin D!

For me, wearing shorts and a t-shirt, I need to spend at least 2 hours outside every day. 

That’s just not going to happen so I need to get it from somewhere else.

Common Sources of Vitamin D and Supplements

You can also get Vitamin D from foods like salmon, sardines, egg yolks and shrimp, but I don’t regularly eat any of those things so I supplement with Vitamin D.

It has a very short half life, so it’s a supplement you need to take every day, or every other day.

A common dosage is 1,000 IU per day, but depending on your current level, it may be beneficial to take 5,000-10,000 IU per day during a high illness season.

Some signs of Vitamin D deficiency look a lot like being sick! 

If you are showing any of these things, time to get tested! 

  • Tiredness, aches, and pains
  • Bone or muscle pain or weakness
  • Stress fractures

 

A test is a simple blood or finger prick test you can request from your doctor.
