My family and I are on a bucket list trip to Peru and I wanted to share a few of our experiences.

This morning we were up long before the sun…

We walked to the train station, rode a train 1 1/2 hours, met our guide and boarded a bus and held on for 25 minuntes up breakneck turns to the top of a mountain.

Which mountain?

The one and only Machu Picchu…

machu picchu

Needless to say—Peru isn’t disappointing us!

As we walked through the stone entrance gate to this official Wonder of the World, so many questions flooded my mind…

  • Why in the world did they build this amazing city at the top of sheer, 1500 foot cliffs?
  • Why is it still here, so well preserved?
  • Why did the Spanish conquerors leave it alone?

…and why did people devote their lives to building this stone wonder?

Our energetic guide Gladys spent the next three hours helping answer these questions and more.

Although there are still a lot of unknowns about the origins and purpose of this city on the mountain (Machu Picchu is translated “Old Mountain”)…

…the pure brilliance of their engineering and architecture is indisputable. They were incredible artisans.

machu picchu

Gladys explained that:

  1. The first generation of hardy Inka people cleared the land of the dense, nearly impenetrable jungle.
  2. The second generation built terraces of stone, gravel and imported soil. Along with the aqueduct and irrigation systems that are still functioning today.
  3. The third generation began growing crops and finished the stone city, complete with homes, storage buildings, temples and a palace for the Inka.

It was not until the fourth generation of people that they began living and using the city as it was intended!

Three GENERATIONS of people toiled their entire lives building something they never saw complete…

…why in the world did they do that?

We will never be sure of an answer to this question, but many people have made educated guesses through the years.

Machu Picchu is thought to have been a center for learning and astrology (as well as a refuge for the Inka)…

The people revered and worshipped the water, PacchuMama (Mother Earth), the Condor and other Gods related to Nature.

We can guess that their devotion to these Gods and to the Inka gave them a big enough Why to live and work an entire lifetime building a city for them.

I started wondering if I believe in anything that deeply…

What do I spend my time and talents doing?

The question of WHY is an important one!

About five years ago I found an even bigger WHY…

I realized I could not only help my patients have healthier mouths, but healthier bodies and lives. What a great profession!

And what’s even cooler is that I’ve spent my life learning about what I thought was random, odd pieces of information about a wide variety of self-reliance and health topics such as…

  • Food and nutrition
  • Cooking
  • Food preserving
  • Gardening
  • Herbal medicine

…and ancient healing arts.

My family laughs at my bookshelf because you’d think ten different people bought books to fill it. (I’ve always been very curious about a lot of things)

This new WHY has given me an opportunity to share all these random bits of information and I love it!

Next month I’m launching Living Well with Dr. Michelle.

The name might be a little corny…

…but it’s exactly what I hope to do with this outreach — help you LIVE WELL!

Watch for our Live Course Calendar with courses I present on everything from “What is Holistic Dentistry to Healthy?” to “Easy Family Meals”.

We will also be hosting courses by other health care providers in our brand new education center.

Watch for blogs and videos on all sorts of Living Well topics (I have even been filming here in Peru)

I can’t wait!

From Machu Picchu,

Dr. Michelle “I love Peru” Jorgensen

Our Drs Are Pioneers https://www.totalcaredental.com/2019/06/23/our-drs-are-pioneers/ Sun, 23 Jun 2019 16:06:46 +0000 https://www.totalcaredental.com/?p=28382

The Safe Mercury Removal System

Pioneers in Health Care

The Doctors at Total Care Dental and Wellness have been called Pioneers, for their innovative and health-focused patient care, but what exactly IS a pioneer?   Is the day of the pioneer gone – already claimed by Edison for his invention of the lightbulb, the Wright Brothers with their world changing airplane, and all of those dusty covered wagons conquering the “west”? Is there a need for pioneers today?

I wasn’t sure of the answer, so I looked up the definition of pioneer. Webster tells us a pioneer “is a person who begins or helps develop something new and prepares the way for others to follow.” Well, those pioneer shoes are big shoes to fill, but I must admit, our doctors are doing exactly this.

Dentistry has been around a long time. Are there really new things that need to be developed? The answer is yes, because we’re learning more about the effect of oral health on overall health every single day. What you put in your mouth and do to your mouth GREATLY affects the rest of you.

Our very own doctors are developing methods and protocols that improve health, and we are preparing the way for others to follow (more on that at the end because we need your help!) I thought you’d like to know what we’ve been up to!

Dr. Michelle Jorgensen, DDS, TNC, CNAS, FAGD

I started Total Care Dental nearly 20 years ago, with a focus on incredible patient care. Patients loved this approach and the practice grew. Then I got sick. Really sick. The practice was for sale until I figured out my problem was mercury poisoning – from the fillings I had been drilling out. In order to get well, I had to learn a new way of taking out mercury fillings (all those silver fillings are 50% mercury…).

This started me down a health and wellness journey that I didn’t expect. I have since completely converted the practice to a Health Based Dental and Wellness office, become a Therapeutic Nutritional Counselor, a Certified Autoimmune Nutritional Specialist and am completing a Traditional Naturopath licensure program. What a ride!

  • Created protocols to incorporate herbal and homeopathic treatments for healing, pain relief and overall wellness.
  • Developed a health coach program and Patient Care Guide to help people with their Nutrition and Lifestyle
  • For our out of state patients, started a virtual consult portal and on-site all-inclusive treatment program
  • Wrote Healthy Mouth, Healthy You – a guide to Holistic Dentistry that can be found on Amazon.

I knew I had to have partners in this adventure, so I scouted out doctors that are THE BEST in what they do in the country.

Dr. Chase Larsen, DMD

After getting a degree in neuroscience, he attended dental school, then got accepted into a a rigorous residency program. In his residency he learned to do dental revisions and IV sedation.  He is our on-site Healthy Cosmetic Dentistry master. I have completed hundreds of smile makeovers, but I send everyone to him now! He has such attention to detail, and the smiles he creates, with very conservative, health conscious treatments, are spectacular! He also performs a lot of our dental restorative work – fillings and crowns, along with safe metal removal.

  • Created the Bio-Luxe veneer. This is a very conservative, cost effective same day smile makeover treatment. Without changing your underlying tooth, he can change your smile in one appointment!
  • Became certified to place no-drill porcelain veneers for more extensive, longer lasting smile changes

Dr. Sergio Montes, DMD

Dentistry is a second career for Dr. Montes. He started in cellular and molecular biology and worked in a lab studying heart disease and aging. He decided to go to dental school, and after graduating built a holistic based dental practice in Arizona. His practice was very successful, but he and his family felt drawn to Utah. Through a mutual contact, he was led to our office, and has since sold his practice in Arizona and is with us full time. He has been an instructor for Biomimetic Dentistry for years and is in the process of becoming a Naturopath. He focuses on creating Biomimetic (mimicking nature) dental restorations and infection removal and surgeries.

  • Helped us create our ozone protocols, including ozonating all of our water that we treat with and adding ozone oils to protocol.
  • Created a conservative sleep therapy program conservative sleep when c-pap and other appliances aren’t effective

Dr. Myles Preble, DDS

A renowned dentist in the holistic and biologic world, Dr. Preble is truly a pioneer. He performed safe metal removal and other holistic practices for more than 20 years, until he also became sick from mercury and had to sell his practice. This led him to learning more about Nutrition and the genetic components of health, so he could heal and help others. He performs many of our new patient exams and does Wellness testing and counseling.

  • Provides long-lasting relief for TMJ and sleep problems with appliances that fix the problem rather than just covering it up. Uses DNA (Trios) appliance and the Myobrace for children.
  • One of the most highly trained dentists in the world in nutrition and genomics

Dr. Brian Jones, DDS

Dr. Jones is a new addition to our team, but not new to dentistry. He has spent the last years teaching the next generation of dental students at Roseman Dental School. He was highly regarded as a level-headed, detail oriented dentist that was a favorite of students and staff alike. Wanting to have more hands-on treatment opportunities, he sought out Total Care Dental. He loves the holistic approach to health care and is excited to bring his restorative and surgical skills to our office.

  • Developed the protocols for healthy wisdom teeth removals, including using ozone to disinfect and fibrin and stem cells from the patient to help the areas heal properly
  • Becoming SMART certified for mercury removal

I am so excited to have this team of doctors, that are truly pioneers, here with me at Total Care Dental and Wellness. You are in good hands.

If you like what we are doing, tell others about it. Ask them to seek out dentists in their area that are open to changing and learning (not all of them are unfortunately) and help us spread the word! This is our own mountain to climb, and the climb is worth it. Patients that have answers for the first time, stories of people being able to start back into the career, be the grandma they have wanted to be, or just feel like themselves again – these are the reasons this pioneering is worth it. Thank you for helping us lead the way.

Mercury Fillings Made Me Sick… https://www.totalcaredental.com/2019/06/11/mercury-fillings-made-me-sick/ Tue, 11 Jun 2019 23:57:49 +0000 https://www.totalcaredental.com/?p=28259
  • I nearly quit dentistry due to chronic illness
  • I discovered that I had mercury poisoning from removing silver fillings
  • This changed my view on dentistry and what our profession was missing

I come from a family of dentists…

That’s just what we do.

My father has been practicing for nearly 40 years, and because he loves dentistry—it has been his hobby as well as his profession!   Three of my younger brothers and I watched this passion and decided to follow in his footsteps.

I was trained to perform traditional dental procedures in school and continued my education over nights and weekends after graduating.  I couldn’t get enough!

I too grew to love this profession and thought I would work for forty years, just like my dad.   Then my health issues started…

My Symptoms Started Small

It was nothing big at first… just some digestive issues.

I though it probably had something to do with what we were eating.  As a busy mom of four young kids, I realized our entire family could benefit from some changes.

I started reading and researching, and we started slow.  We started having a green smoothie for breakfast.  I had to pay my kids to drink them for the first month—but the habit stuck.

I was blown away at this whole new way of eating and looking at food.  It wasn’t just about calories or yumminess…

…it was about how we wanted to fuel our bodies.  Again, I couldn’t get enough!

My Natural Health Journey Began

I continued to learn and implement things over time and started to see changes.  All of us noticed a difference in our health.

The kids didn’t get sick anymore, my husband dropped 10 pounds, and most of my digestive issues went away.   Things were looking up, but it wasn’t all better…

I continued having some nagging digestive issues, and more concerning—I was having numbness in my right arm and hand.

Many doctors and chiropractors later, no one had any answers for me…

Then my memory started to slip.

I’ve always had an excellent memory, and I felt like my brain was filled with fog.  What was going on??

I Was Ready to Quit Dentistry

I needed to find the answer, so I continued to learn about nutrition, and eventually ventured into alternative health.  I became a Therapeutic Nutritional Counselor to learn more.

I tried everything including…

  • Muscle testing
  • Energy work
  • Biofeedback
  • Acupuncture
  • Infrared saunas
  • Supplements
  • Homeopathy
  • Essential oils
  • Massage
  • Super foods…

…and on and on.  No changes.

It was tough to get out of bed each morning, let alone put on a happy face for 20-30 patients each day.  I was depressed, couldn’t remember things, had no energy and was ready to quit dentistry.

I Discovered I Had Mercury Poisoning

As a last effort, I decided to look into holistic dentistry.

Perhaps I could slow down and do nutritional counseling instead of dental procedures. It would be easier on my body.

I found a successful holistic dentist and shared my story with him.  He sighed and said, “You sound just like me ten years ago.  Have you looked into mercury poisoning?”

I didn’t know what he was talking about…

I hadn’t placed a mercury filling in over 10 years! (The dental profession calls them “amalgam” or “silver”, but any non-gold metal filling is 50% mercury).

He told me the problem isn’t when you place the filling, it’s when you remove it.

Removing Mercury Fillings Can Be Worse Than Placing Them

When a dentist removes an old mercury filling, it sends mercury vapors into the air.  I had been removing multiple mercury fillings every day for the last 10 years, without any sort of protection.  I had a very probably case of mercury poisoning.

After a heavy metal test, I found I did indeed have very high levels of mercury.  Finally, an answer!

I started a lengthy detox program, and slowly felt my energy and my memory return.  I wondered what other harmful things were going on in my dental practice every day.

I realized I had come a long way in my understanding about nutrition.  Now it was time for me to transition my dental practice into a place where I could restore health, not just fix teeth.

Biological Dentistry – What the Profession Has Been Missing

True to form, I couldn’t get my hands on information quickly enough.

I bought every Holistic dental book on Amazon and tried to read them all in a week!

I studied programs and bought videos.  I searched research articles and started trying things in my practice.  Most of my patients liked this change in focus, and it felt good.  I started to enjoy dentistry again!

Through all this study, I learned two things…

There Aren’t Enough People In the Middle

There are a lot of myths and controversial subjects in dentistry, and most people are either far on the alternative side or far on the traditional side.

I couldn’t find many that ventured toward the middle.

You might ask why I want to be in the middle.  Well, what I found through years and mountains of research was that some dentists were too strident, too enraged, too frustrated to be objective…

They have a “they are out to get us” mentality that I don’t relate to, ignoring all that is good in the traditional dental model.

Others in traditional dentistry blissfully ignored strong evidence that practices we accept as “standard of care” are outdated, proven to be harmful, or even potentially toxic or dangerous.

The Information Available Needs to Be Easier to Read

The second thing I learned is that the information is too technical and way too lengthy for most people to read…

Some of the books are over an inch thick!

I didn’t even want to read them—and I’m a dentist!

I decided I wanted to provide information in an easy to read, easy to follow, honest guide to dentistry format, which is why I wrote my book “Health Mouth, Healthy You!”

These are not the results of research studies in an isolated lab…

…these are my results from day to day practice with people just like you!

Your Dental Self-Health Check Quiz

To get started, take this quiz to determine if your dentistry might be making you sick.

  1. Do you have any “silver” mercury fillings?
  2. Do you have any root canals?
  3. Did you have your wisdom teeth removed?
  4. Do you have any crowns that have metal in them (may be under the porcelain – you will see a dark line around the gum line if you do)?
  5. Do you have less energy than you want?
  6. Do you have any autoimmune diseases?
  7. Have you been to many doctors, trying to find answers for your health problems?
  8. Have you tried supplements and diets without large changes in the way you feel?
  9. Do you wake up with a dry mouth or sore muscles in your head, neck or face?
  10. Do you sleep poorly?

If you answered “yes” to more than 5 of the above questions, there is an 80% chance your dentistry is related to your health.

It’s time for you to see a biologic or holistic dentist.

We realize that there when it comes to finding a biologic or holistic dentist close by, your options may be limited…

That’s why we offer a virtual dental and overall health consultation!

No matter where you live, you can receive a dental and overall health consultation virtually from one of the doctors of Total Care Dental.

If you’re like I was and searching for a way to improve your health, let me help you get some answers.

How your Dental Dollars are best Spent https://www.totalcaredental.com/2019/05/20/how-your-dental-dollars-are-best-spent/ Mon, 20 May 2019 00:18:41 +0000 https://www.totalcaredental.com/?p=28232

how your dental dollars are spentFor Mother’s Day this year, I had a special request for a gift.  I love cooking and cook a lot of vegetables, so I appreciate a great knife.  I got an excellent chef’s knife a few years ago and have been diligently sharpening it…poorly.  It has come to the point that I’m not able to get it sharp anymore, so I asked for a new one for Mother’s Day.

I have odd and wide-flung interests and am in a chat group with people that like to talk about cooking and knives.  I asked them which knife to get and got a great recommendation for a beautiful Japanese knife. Being a thoughtful wife, I bought it for myself and told my husband I already had my present!

This knife came in the mail last week, and frankly, I don’t know how I’ve lived my life without it!  People talk about a knife “cutting like it’s butter”, and this one does just that. Now I know how fancy chefs can make such perfect julienne carrots and beautifully sliced tomatoes.  I was marveling at the cucumbers I cut. They were cut so cleanly the cut side shimmered! I know I’m showing my complete nerd side here, but I literally am so excited to go home every night because I GET to cook dinner and use my knife!!

Frugality works sometimes

I am usually quite frugal and frequent thrift stores for clothing, cookware and housewares.  In this case, every penny I spent was worth it. There are some things that are worth paying full price for.

There are some things in dentistry that fall into that category as well.  We often have patients that have come from other offices frustrated or disappointed with the dental care they have received.  Sometimes it is because they have had corners cut in their care, and they are paying for it in lost money, time and health.

Dental Guide to Dentistry Worth Paying For…

I’m going to give you an up-front guide to which things in dentistry are worth every penny to get the best:

Dental Exam – This may be a place you’re tempted to save some money, but missed dental problems, and more commonly, missed sources for dental problems, can be very costly in future dental needs.  You may spend years looking for answers in the wrong places.

Dental Fillings– You may want to “wait and see” if you need a filling, particularly if it doesn’t hurt.  Above, is a great picture to show what that may lead to:

  • Cavity between teeth filled when it’s small – $250
  • Deeper cavity that requires a crown or on-lay to restore – $1000-2000
  • Cavity that reaches the nerve must be removed and replaced with an implant – $4500-5000

Dental Implants– these can be confusing.  You might see signs advertising Dental Implants for $995 and think that is a deal too good to miss.  What they don’t tell you is that they are using a cheap Chinese metal implant that will cause reactions in your body. That fee also only covers the implant, not the connector or the crown on the top.  Make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Ask what kind of implant, and if that fee also includes the abutment (connector) and the crown. I would be very suspect of any implant priced at this level.

Tooth Extractions– This is also a procedure that you will find advertised for less.  A tooth can be removed by most any dentist, but that isn’t the end of the story.  The tooth needs to be removed carefully, in order to preserve the bone. After the tooth is removed, the area needs to be cleaned thoroughly and disinfected with ozone.  The socket then needs to be filled with a growth promoting substance that your body will accept. The state-of the art material you want is called PRF – Platelet Rich Fibrin.  These materials come from your own blood and has stem cells and growth factors in it that stimulate your bone to heal. Don’t settle for less, or you may be settling for a dry socket and lingering infection in that area that may affect your body for years to come.dr-jorgensen

Hopefully this gives you some idea of the most important places to spend your dental dollars.  We all need to be careful with our dollars, and this will help you make sure your money is well spent.

Now back to cooking….!

Have a great Spring!

Dr. Jorgensen’s book is hot off the press! https://www.totalcaredental.com/2019/01/28/dr-jorgensen-book/ Mon, 28 Jan 2019 13:55:02 +0000 https://www.totalcaredental.com/?p=2442

This week I finished something I have been working on for four years.  Yes, four long years. I finally published my first book! “Health Mouth, Healthy YOU!  Holistic Dental Guide” is now available on Amazon as a print book and ebook.

As an avid book reader, I have read thousands of words and pages in my lifetime.  After writing my own book, I appreciate every word others have written even more. Every single word was written, edited, rethought, and edited again.  It’s certainly not a task for the faint of heart!

So why did I do it?  The subtitle on the book is “Transforming Your Whole-Body Health Starts in the Mouth”.  I set out to learn more about the profession of dentistry, and on the road there found that the mouth is the first indicator of health problems, a contributor to overall health concerns, and sometimes the main source of the problem completely.

I would love all of you to read the book.  Not for me, but for you. I want you to be able to take charge of your health and really know what’s going on.  I want you to have hope for a disease-free future. I want you to be HEALTHY!

Right now we are giving away the book for free.  You only have to pay the $4.99 shipping on it. If you would like a book, please call us at 801-756-3737 and we will get it mailed to you asap.

I’ve included my introduction below.  If you’re interested, I would be honored to share what I’ve learned with you.  Remember, Healthy Mouth Healthy YOU!

People Starving all Around Us! https://www.totalcaredental.com/2018/11/15/people-starving-all-around-us/ Thu, 15 Nov 2018 19:08:37 +0000 https://www.totalcaredental.com/?p=2417

This month’s topic is one that is near and dear to my heart – healthy weight loss.  I remembered I wrote a blog post on topics like this once, so I dug up this post from 2014 to share again.  The information never gets old, and we need to keep hearing it!

11-17-2014

“We had a typical doctor’s visit in our family this week.  Our foreign exchange student, Bobby, had to get a physical to play basketball for the high school.  That’s pretty much the only reason we visit the doctor anymore. He told Bobby the same thing he tells all of my kids – “you’re very healthy, but maybe just a little skinny.”

I know, I know, there are many people that would do anything to have a doctor say that about them, but it always gets me a little fired up!  We were talking about it tonight at the table, while they were all ravenously eating seconds and thirds of dinner. These are not kids that are starving.  In fact, exactly the opposite. They eat a LOT of food. The difference is that the food they eat really fuels them. Their bodies can recognize it as food, and that food turns into energy and health rather than pounds.

What are Calories??

Earlier in the week, someone asked me how many calories were in a cookie I made .  It surprised me a little – it’s been a long time since I’ve thought about the calories in anything.  That’s interesting, because I was raised in the low-fat, low-cal era. Calories were everything for years, and now they don’t even enter my mind.  What’s changed?

Again, at the dinner table we talked about it.  They asked why they could eat so much food and stay skinny.  One reason is obvious – their teenage metabolisms are cranking in high gear.  But we also talked about one of my favorite concepts – the appestat.

Appestat to the Rescue

We are all equipped with a gauge that measures our appetite.  When we are hungry, this appestat turns on and tells us to find food.  The appestat is looking for what it is low in- nutrients, vitamins, minerals.  The appestat stays on as long as it is still low in nutrients. So if you eat a big bag of potato chips, you don’t satisfy any of those nutrient needs, and the appestat stays on.  It tells you that you are still needing food. (Have you ever eaten a bag of potato chips and still felt like you needed more – thank your appestat for that one.)

As long as you eat food that is missing essential nutrients, you will feel like you need to keep eating.  This is how people can eat so much and say they are just eating enough to get full. Try eating four plates of a substantial salad and see if you’re still hungry.  You can’t do it! Your appestat is satisfied after the first plate, and it turns off and says you are done.

Overweight AND Starving??

So the key is what nutrients are in the food, not how much food.  You can be very overweight and malnourished at the same time. Read that again.  Are we feeding our bodies, or are we just eating food??

After I talked about this with my kids, my daughter Liza said “we need to teach people this!!”   That’s why I’m writing this blog!

Family is the Reason

Why I got interested in health and nutrition in the first place is family.  I was struggling with digestive and hormonal problems, my husband was struggling with headaches and mouth sores, and my kids each had their own struggles too.  We took baby steps to get where we are now, and want to help other families do the same thing.

Most of you know some about my son Luke, but maybe not the whole story.  I want to share his story – as I wrote it for Green Smoothie Girl Robyn Openshaw.  I want you to see what nutrition can do for someone who is starving on the standard american diet.

Luke’s Story

“One of my BIGGEST pet peeves is when people say “I try to help my family get healthy, but they just won’t eat that kind of food.”  Hold me back… You aren’t punishing them by giving them healthy food to eat. You are giving them a gift. I have personal experience with a child that was literally “starving” on the typical kid diet of chicken nuggets, mac n cheese, french fries and white bread.  This child is my son Luke. We adopted him when he was 2 1/2 years old. He could barely walk, he couldn’t talk- not even one word, and doctors thought he was autistic. When we first brought him home I had him tested by an early intervention center, and he tested at a 8 month old level on everything.  Remember – he was 2 1/2 years old. He was so tiny. In fact, the first night I had to bathe him in the sink at our hotel because he was too little for the shower. (See photo below.)

He’s Hispanic, so most people ask what country we adopted him from.  Well, Luke was from Las Vegas, Nevada. Last I knew, that wasn’t a third world country!  He did have a rough start to life – he was born severely premature at 25 weeks. His birth mother was single, with very little money, and very little help.  I think it’s a miracle that he lived that first year- feeding tubes, oxygen at night, surgeries… He is a fighter.

But the prematurity wasn’t the only thing to blame.  In fact, most kids catch up from a premature birth by 3 year old.  Luke was no where near catching up. In the short few hours I had with his birth mom, I found out what they had been eating.  Things food stamps would buy – bread, crackers, cereal, bananas, peanut butter. Add in chicken nuggets and french fries and you have his entire food chart.  Our first meal with him made me cry. He shoved the food in with two hands, as fast as he could eat (there was no way he was swallowing), until he was sick from eating so much. This continued for many months.  He wanted what he was used to – crackers, bread, anything carb loaded and white. He was eating so much food, and was still so tiny, and so hungry.

That first night I also noticed a strange sound in his belly.   We scheduled to see a pediatric digestive system doctor. He found that one of Luke’s early surgeries had failed and his stomach had moved up to where his lungs should be.  He had to have major surgery to put everything back where it belonged. After the surgery, they told us his diet would be restricted. He couldn’t eat all those simple carbs anymore – they would go straight through.

This was right about the time I found Green Smoothie Girl and was contemplating some serious family diet changes, so the timing was perfect.  We added green smoothies every morning, and he liked them. We also started eating more and more vegetables in every meal. He still ate ravenously, but it changed to anything green!  He couldn’t get enough broccoli, green beans, asparagus, peas, lettuce… he loved them all. He started avoiding the carbs on his own – he would leave the bread uneaten on his plate. Other things started changing too.  He started using sign language, then finally words! He started to grow – not a lot but a little. His motor skills improved and his behavior seemed to mellow some. Something was making a difference.

Luke still has his challenges, but food is no longer one of them.  Now he is a thriving 7 year old that LOVES anything green and will eat veggies over anything else he’s offered.  He turns down sweets, carbs and most meat. He is small, but he is growing, and I know that it is because he is actually getting fuel, rather than just food.  He does well academically, and is not autistic. He is coordinated and has excellent motor skills. He is a different boy than the one eating the standard diet of most American kids.

If I had let Luke “not eat” the food that his body needed, who knows where he would be today.  We owe it to our families to help them get the things that they need to be as happy and healthy as they are able, and they deserve.  Be tough – it’s worth it! And this is coming from someone who knows.”

Watch for my Facebook Live this month – my hubby showing you how to make our Bulletproof Chocolate drink every morning – this is a change that has helped us both slim down a bit.  Don’t miss it if you’re interested.

Have an amazing week!

Love,

Rainstorms, Airbnb’s and Our Tummies https://www.totalcaredental.com/2018/10/15/rainstorms-airbnbs-and-our-tummies/ Mon, 15 Oct 2018 19:24:50 +0000 https://www.totalcaredental.com/?p=2390 rain and tummies

Anytime I book a place to stay on Airbnb, I never know quite what I’m going to find when I arrive! This week was another adventure! I am staying in southern Utah and speaking at and attending a retreat with Karen Urbanek. I knew I needed to stay somewhere off site because I have some work to do, but there weren’t a lot of choices. I found a fun ranch and thought it would be perfect.

It was a rainy, dark night when I arrived, but the instructions for self check in seemed pretty self explanatory. “Park in front of the garden gate, take the stairs down between the house and garden and go into the garage.” So I followed the instructions – walked down the stairs and saw an old garage door that was closed. But there were no other doors. Nowhere. I walked back up the stairs, made sure I was in the right place, and walked back to the garage. I was getting soaked walking back and forth in the rain, and really needed a bathroom stop, so decided I was just going to lift up the garage door.

It was the right move! I lifted up the door, walked through a wood shop and into the basement of the home. I found it, and it was better than I expected! The next day I went to the retreat and told them where I was staying. I got some funny reactions! They offered to let me stay with them instead, but it really was okay. I realized I am not too picky, which is a good thing.

At the course we are learning about diet and what to eat to heal our gut. We have learned how gut health relates to autoimmune disease, cancer, tooth health, brain health, etc. It’s something that shouldn’t be messed with! So even though I’m not picky about where I stay, you and I should be picky about what we eat!

Some things I learned that you can do right away:
total care gut check

  1. Eat something fermented! I know fermentation has a bad rap, but it’s nothing other than a preservation method that has been used for thousands of years. Our ancestors knew something we’ve forgotten. That fermentation helps to build your gut better an anything else you can do.
  2. Fermented options – Kombucha, Kefir (dairy or coconut water or other water), Fermented vegetables like Sauerkraut or Kimchi
  3. Switch up your ferments. Don’t buy or make the same type of kombucha all the time.       Switch up brand and flavor to feed your gut a variety of good bacteria.
  4. Eat things that give you Short Chain Fatty Acids. These are helpful in reducing food allergies. Find them in apples, apricots, blackberries, carrots, oranges, onions, leeks, asparagus, oats, rice, and grasses.
  5. Minimize gluten containing grains – wheat, barley and rye.
  6. Only eat cultured dairy.

There is so much more, but these are some things you can start on right now if you have a gut or digestive problem. You will see a change!

Now back to the retreat! I’m learning about healing with Hydrogen right now. Never a dull moment and always too much to learn!

Could A Root Canal Be Making You Sick? https://www.totalcaredental.com/2018/09/26/could-a-root-canal-be-making-you-sick/ Wed, 26 Sep 2018 19:10:57 +0000 https://www.totalcaredental.com/?p=2355

What are teeth made of?

Teeth are alive! To understand root canals and the possible problems with them, you need to understand what
teeth are made of.

Enamel The hard outer layer is called the enamel. It is the part you see, and is made of crystals.
Dentin The next layer is called the dentin. This layer is mineralized and contains a maze of tiny tubules -in one
molar there are up to three miles of tubules! These tubes go from the inside of the tooth to the outer enamel.
Pulp The pulp is in the center and contains nerves and blood vessels. Here nutrients and other things are
passed from the body to the tooth and back again. This pulp is housed in 1-4 major “canals” inside the tooth.

What is a root canal?

-The nerve inside a tooth can get inflamed or infected from a very large cavity or trauma, and it can hurt!

If that nerve dies, it leads to an infected, abscessed tooth. At that point, there are only two options for the tooth.

1. Pull the tooth.
2. Fill the root with a plastic-like material (Root canal).

No one wants to have their tooth pulled, so dentists figured out how to clean that dead nerve tissue out, disinfect the inside of the tooth and fill it – that is a root canal.

The techniques and materials have evolved, and today more than 40 million root canals are performed every year.

Why?

To save teeth. The tooth is no longer alive, but it stays in the jaw bone to continue chewing and smiling.

The problem with root canals

Dentists are usually successful in cleaning out the main root canal area and disinfecting it.

So, what is the problem?

Remember that dentin is made up of miles of tubules. The bacteria that are involved in tooth decay, and in the infection of the nerve, travel through those dentin tubules- the highway system of the tooth.

The medications used to sterilize a tooth work in the main root canal area, but not the tubules. There are too many of them. Once the root is filled, the bacteria trapped in the tubules are now sealed inside the tooth.

These bacteria are cut off from their blood supply, and mutate into dangerous bacteria with even more dangerous toxins. Research has found that even the most meticulously done root canal leaks around the filling material, so those bacteria, and their toxins, can get out and into your bloodstream.

Using DNA analysis, 400 percent more bacteria have been found in the blood surrounding the root canal tooth than were found in the tooth itself.

The bone around the tooth has been found to have even HIGHER bacterial
counts than the blood. This taxes your immune system. That immune system also doesn’t care for dead substances, and just the presence of a dead tooth with dead tissue can cause your system to launch an attack.

Infection, plus the autoimmune rejection reaction, are all reasons your body may be affected by a root canal tooth. These infections and reactions “seed” infections and problems far distant from the infected tooth.

Some of the diseases shown to be related to bacteria from root canals:

  • Arthritis
  • Heart disease, heart valve problems, clogged arteries (A root canal gives you a 3 times higher chance of having a heart attack.)
  • Eye disease, Sinus problems
  • Anemia
  • Gall bladderdisease,
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Thyroid disease
  • And Breast tumors…

In fact, Dr. Robert Jones, who has researched the relationship between root canals and breast cancer, found an extremely high correlation between root canals and breast cancer.

He found the following in a five-year study of 300 breast cancer cases:

93 percent of women with breast cancer had root canals
Tumors, in the majority of cases, occurred on the same side of the body as the root canal(s)

Can you have a successful root canal?

The key to a successful root canal is the health of the person getting the root canal! People with strong immune systems and no family tendency to chronic degenerative disease might retain successful root canal teeth. Research has shown this to be true for about 30% of people.

Here’s the catch twenty two- if healthy people have an accident, catch a flu-bug, have a death in the family, or suffer some other severe stress, their immune system becomes over stressed.

When the immune system is over stressed, it has to drop the ball on something, and those trapped bacteria may multiply and start causing problems. So, a healthy person with a root canal may not say healthy. This means a non-problematic root canal may become a problem even years in the future.

Recommendations

There is not a hard and fast answer to the root canal controversy. I can’t give you a rule, but from what I’ve shared, I can give recommendations:

  • If you have a tooth that is dying, and you have a healthy immune system and no family history of degenerative disease like diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, autoimmune disease or cancer, you have a statistically higher chance for a successful root canal – at least temporarily.
  • If you have a tooth that is dying and you are in the 70% category with some immune problems, any degenerative disease or a family history of degenerative diseases, you have a statistically lower chance for a successful root canal. You may wish to remove the tooth rather than pay for a root canal that has a high likelihood to fail.
  • If you have an existing root canal and are in good health, AND if the tooth appears healthy and uninfected on a dental-specific CT scan, you may be fine to leave the tooth there for now.
  • If you have an existing root canal and have progressive degenerative diseases or immune problems, your root canal may be contributing to your health problems. Make sure to go to a biologic dentist if you choose to have it removed – the infection needs to be completely removed from the bone.
Warning: Removal of a root canal tooth may not fully alleviate the illness you feel may be caused by that tooth. There may be many factors contributing to illness, but that root canal tooth may be interfering with your health and healing.

Clean your Body to Avoid Disease! https://www.totalcaredental.com/2018/08/30/clean-your-body-to-avoid-disease/ Thu, 30 Aug 2018 02:04:42 +0000 https://www.totalcaredental.com/?p=2345 This week was full of self-inflicted misery!  Why would I do that?? I need to stay healthy so I can help other people get healthy.  It’s as simple as that!

You see, helping people get well led to me getting sick.  I had serious mercury poisoning from drilling out “silver” mercury fillings all day with no protection.  I had numbness and memory problems, digestive issues and nearly had to sell Total Care Dental. It took a lot of learning and changing the way we do things for me to get back to health, and I want to stay that way.

Our bodies are made to protect us
Our bodies are made to filter and remove toxins, but if you put too much toxins in, those filters get overloaded, preventing anything from being filtered properly.  There are three main filters through which our bodies get rid of toxins like mercury – the liver, kidneys and lymphatic system. These filters are connected to so many functions in our bodies, so when one gets clogged up, it affects the entire body.  My filters were clogged with mercury and my entire body was affected.

It’s been a few years since I cleaned my “filters”, so it was time to do it again.  If you’ve never done a hard-core liver and gall-bladder cleanse, you don’t know what you are missing! That is what I’ve been working on the last two weeks, and have one more week to finish.  It started with a colonic. I didn’t know how I would feel after, but was not prepared for the violent reaction my body had to stirring things up! I was white as a ghost, sweaty, nauseous, my mouth was dry and I was in pain.   I didn’t know if I was going to be able to drive home. That was just day 1 of the three week cleanse!

That entire week I was to eat vegan, which is a breeze this time a year at our house.  Our garden is overflowing with delicious veggies. Another colonic (that was only half as bad as the first ) finished out the week.

Cleansing…
This week I was supposed to do a liquid fast all week, drinking four electrolyte drinks each day.  I knew there was no way I was going to continue doing all I do during a week on nothing but electrolyte drinks, so I added a small, plant-only meal once per day.

On Friday that small meal was taken away – no food at all for the day.  At 6 pm I had to drink some nasty, acidic liquid. I had another dose at 8, then a big glass of oil mixed with lemon juice at 10 pm.  Yum. I had to immediately lay down on my right side and go to sleep. Easier said than done!

The night wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it might be, and I woke up early to get the cleanse finished up.  The disgusting acidic drink at 6 am, and another dose at 8. Okay…this falls into the too much information category (TMI), but I was just waiting for things to start moving.  I waited and waited, feeling more lousy with each passing hour. And the worst part – no food until things were cleaned out.

I was going on two days without food and feeling like a mule just kicked me in the gut.  Finally, the cleansing started. My filters were definitely dumping, and I could feel my body saying thank you.  Two more colonics and one more week of vegan eating and I’ll be ready to drill some more mercury out again for a few more years!

Toxins = Disease
Me getting sick wasn’t a fluke – there are some physiologic things that happen when we have toxin overload.  And toxins can come from a lot of places in our world today – antibiotics and hormones in food, EMFs from cell phones and wifi, personal care products, prescription drugs, household cleaners, pesticides and weed killers, mercury fillings in our teeth, fluoride and chlorine in the water….and on and on.  When the body can’t keep up, those filters can become overtaxed.

The body is smart enough to know that toxins are bad, so if the filters can’t work fast enough to get rid of them, the body tries to store them in the “safest” places possible, like fat cells and the lymphatic system.  Sometimes it surround those toxins with fluid – leading to chronic inflammation, fat around the belly and poor lymphatic flow.. Pretty soon there is no more room in all of those “safe” places and they overflow, creating a mess all over the body.

Nutrient Problems
One of the messes they create is problems with nutrient absorption.  Many of our cells uptake nutrients through receptor sites on the outside of the cell.  Imagine a bunch of little doors with keyholes. If the right key (nutrient) comes along, it can open that door and enter the cell.  Unfortunately, some toxins fit in those keyholes too. For example, mercury fits in the zinc receptor site, aluminum fits into the magnesium receptor site and lead fits into the calcium receptor site.  These toxins block the good minerals from getting into the cells.

What does this have to do with getting sick?  Stay with me for one more minute! When your body is lacking in nutrients, it gets out of sync and struggles to keep up with daily functions.  When your immune system is trying to sort through all of these problems, the natural defense mechanisms we were born with can’t keep up and the body becomes more vulnerable to disease.

What disease can toxins cause?
What are some of the diseases toxins can make the body susceptible to?   Frequent colds and flus, headaches, allergies, low energy, brain fog and even acne.  Your body often throws out these signals for years, and eventually more serious problems like thyroid problems, leaky gut, cancer, fatty liver and polycystic kidney rear their ugly heads.

So what do you do??  In our world today we can’t avoid toxins.  It’s impossible. So we have to help our bodies by giving them the right food and water and nutrients, remove toxins that are possible to remove (mercury fillings and infected root canal teeth), and support the filters through detoxing regularly.

Toxic buildup doesn’t happen overnight, and neither does the toxic waste cleanup.  Make sure you are taking care of your body – it’s the only one you get! Whether you jump in with two feet and do an intense cleanse, or whether you think twice about stopping at that fast food joint tonight, and instead make a simple dinner with whole foods at home – both will help you live better and feel better.

If you want to know more about nutrition and cleansing and how your symptoms may be signs of bigger problems, talk to us at your next wellness visit.  Our team is learning and knows a lot of tricks for regaining health and maintaining health. Have a great week!

How to Keep your Focus and Avoid a Bruised Tailbone! https://www.totalcaredental.com/2018/08/13/how-to-keep-your-focus-and-avoid-a-bruised-tailbone/ Mon, 13 Aug 2018 15:08:15 +0000 https://www.totalcaredental.com/?p=2333 I decided I better get back to writing blog posts. I have had my fill of writing in my break from the blog – I’m writing four missionaries weekly and am doing final edits on my book – but haven’t felt like I’ve connected with all of you in the same way since I stopped. So, like it or not…I’m back!

Family Odyssey
This week was a perfect one to get back into the swing of things because I’ve had a lot to write about! Nine years ago my husband and I were asked to help create a weeklong family camping program, connected with the adult Boy Scouts WoodBadge training. It was a lot of work, but the fruits of that labor have been sweet. Hundreds of adults have been trained, which have then guided, led and mentored thousands of young men and women. It was worth every minute.
The first three years of the program, we were either Program or Course Director – the big shots in charge of everything. Taking a fledgling program and helping it to fly is very labor intensive, and we got a little burned out. So we volunteered to be over the 14-17 year old kids the following year, and haven’t looked back. This week we are at camp, and we are over the 12-13 year olds. Our two youngest kids are in the group of 22 kids, and it’s been a blast!

Can I do this?
What do we do? Play all week! Sure there is some guiding and loving and mentoring – and herding – that needs to happen, but mostly we just play along with them. This morning our group was scheduled to do the high COPE course. COPE stands for Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience. We scaled poles towering high above the ground, and pushed ourselves out onto ropes and planks and wires, tethered in, but requiring strength and agility and guts.
I had done this course two years ago, and wondered if I really needed to do it again. Well, the COPE leaders weren’t taking no for an answer. And this time, I would do the high course (about 10 feet higher up, with trickier elements to traverse across). Gulp.
Now, I’m supposed to be the example here. So I started climbing up the pole. I swear that’s the hardest part! Hand over hand, trying to find the next foothold or handhold. I finally got to the top, out of breath and wondering what in the world I had gotten myself into! The first challenge was a bridge of widely space boards suspended over nothing but lots of air! My mouth went dry and I knew I had to do it, but the first step was the hardest. It literally was. After I got started, the adrenaline and the encouragement from my “ground buddy” down below kept me moving steadily through all of the challenges.

Whew! Made it!
When you are done with the course, you zip line down to the bottom and with the help of your buddy, let yourself down the rope. I jumped off the platform, gladly riding the zip line to the bottom, started to let myself down with the lever on my gear and then fell! I had opened the lever up completely and couldn’t get it stopped before I landed right on my backside from about 10 feet up. Ouch! I hadn’t had a misstep the entire time on the high course, and here I was, sitting in the dirt, with a bruised tailbone and wrist at the end of the zip line.
Trying to play the tough-girl role, I didn’t want to tell anyone that I was hurting. So I played it cool, walked the zip line back up and took my place in the shade with the others.

Losing Focus is natural
What happened? Quite simply, I lost focus. I was laser focused while dangling 30 feet in the air, but as soon as I jumped off that platform and went whizzing down to the bottom, I let off the focus and my sore tailbone is what I get to show for it! This is so easy to do in life! We focus hard when the stakes are high (and let’s be honest, focusing hard takes energy), but let off when it doesn’t matter as much.
So how can we stay focused when it matters most? I learned that our brains are finely tuned to distractions. In today’s words, we can’t keep our eyes off the squirrels! And to let us all off the hook, that is the way we have been wired. A distraction is an alert. If you are living in the wilds, the snap of a twig, the warning shriek of a bird – all of these things are distractions that need to be paid attention to for survival. We do it automatically and it’s unstoppable.
We are also rewarded with a flood of chemicals when we need a distraction.
“Oh, I just remembered I need to pick up some yogurt on the way home from work today. Yes! So glad I remembered! (flood of happy emotions). Now, what was I working on??”

Strategies for Focus
I can’t speak for you, but I’m not living in the wilds anymore, and would really like to turn off that distraction switch and get something done. Some strategies I’ve learned that really do work:

  1. First, realize that we are never going to be able to go through a day, or even an hour, without becoming distracted. But we can aim for short periods of distraction-free time. Twenty minutes of deep focus can really make a difference in your performance and outlook.
  2. Do creative work first. I know I trend toward busy work first – cleaning up emails, going through my to-do pile, etc. Problem is these things take energy too and lower our ability to focus when we need it. So, start with the toughest, most creative things that require the most concentration and do the busy work later in the day.
  3. Studies show that we are truly focused for an average of only 6 hours per week. You read that right! So be really diligent with what you put in those hours. Most people focus best early in the morning or late at night, and most of us are more focused outside of the office. So pay attention to when you are most focused and effective and save that time for your most important tasks.
  4. Practice working without distractions. You’ve had years of evolutionary practice to be distracted, so you need to create an environment that works against that trend. Put your phone away, close all nonpertinent windows on your computer, turn off any audio that doesn’t lead to focus. Do it for five minutes at a time and work up to longer sessions. If you feel your mind wandering, bring it back to the task at hand. It’s easy if you know there is an end to the focus time.

Try incorporating one or more of these ideas in your day and see where the focus takes you. I know my lack of focus and my sore tailbone are certainly rewards I don’t want to enjoy again!

Drop me a line and let me know if you enjoy these posts and any ideas you would like me to share. If you’ve followed me in the past, you know the topics will swing widely as do my interests and experiences! Glad to be sharing again!

Have a great week!
