What is Holistic Dentistry?

When I tell people what I do for a living, they often ask me, “What is holistic dentistry?”  Most don’t even know what the word “holistic” means.  To be honest, I didn’t a few years ago either…

I was a traditional dentist, practicing good dentistry and helping my patients get beautiful smiles—then I got sick.

The dental work I was doing for my patients led to my health problems . . . could they be causing or contributing to health problems in my patients as well?

This question led me down a path I couldn’t have anticipated, and I had to learn for myself, “What is Holistic Dentistry?”

What Is Holistic Dentistry?

First, the word Holistic simply means characterized by the treatment of the whole person.”  A lot of medical and dental practices focus on one part of the person.  There are doctors for…

  • Our eyes
  • Our joints
  • Our hearts

…and doctors for our teeth.  Aren’t they all connected?

A holistic dental practice realizes that yes, they are all interconnected—meaning one thing CAN AFFECT ANOTHER.

For example…

  • If you are getting a lot of cavities, it might mean you have digestive problems
  • If you have gum disease, there is no way you can have a healthy gut
  • If you have an infected tooth, your immune system will be weak and may overreact, leading to auto-immune problems
  • If your teeth are wearing away, you may have a mineral absorption problem . . . that may be affecting your bones in the same way

This is what a holistic dentist does — we connect all of the pieces.

What do Holistic Dentists do Differently?

Along with wondering “What is Holistic Dentistry?”, you are probably wondering what we do differently in a holistic dental office:

  1. The first thing we do is take a very thorough health history.  We want to know about all of your health challenges and concerns, not just your teeth.
  2. We then discuss and really listen to your concerns and goals for your dental and overall health.
  3. We perform a lot of tests to find out the root causes of your complaints and symptoms.

Most importantly, we create a personal plan that addresses:

  • overall health
  • nutrition
  • supplements
  • safe dental treatments and
  • complementary health care

This might sound like a lot (and it is), but it’s the only way we would dream of practicing at Total Care Dental and Wellness anymore.

How do you become a Holistic Dentist?

This was certainly not an overnight process for the doctors here, and shouldn’t be.  We had to find a team of experts that could provide safer, more health conscious treatments.

What are these different treatments?

Some examples of Holistic Dentistry are:

  • Safe Mercury removal
  • All-ceramic dental restorations
  • Ceramic Dental Implants
  • Dental surgery with Stem Cell treatments
  • Ozone treatments
  • Sleep Apnea root cause treatment
  • Natural Cosmetic Dentistry

What changes did Total Care Dental and Wellness make in becoming a Holistic Dental office?

Well, the first change is our name!  We added Wellness because we talk about nutrition and lifestyle and work closely with other health care providers.

Secondly, we had to change how we think and talk about dental problems and how they relate to health.

This reminds me of a story told about Ghandi….

…in the story, a woman in India was upset that her son was eating too much sugar. No matter how much she chided him, he continued to eat the sugar.

Totally frustrated, she decided to take her son to see his great hero Mahatma Gandhi.  She approached the great leader respectfully and said…

“Sir, my son eats too much sugar. It is not good for his health. Would you please advise him to stop eating it?”

Gandhi listened to the woman carefully, turned and spoke to her son . . . “Go home and come back in two weeks.”

The woman looked perplexed and wondered why he had not asked the boy to stop eating sugar. She took the boy by the hand and went home.

Two weeks later she returned, boy in hand. Gandhi motioned for them to come forward. He looked directly at the boy and said . . . “Boy, you should stop eating sugar. It is not good for your health.”

The boy nodded and promised he would stop.

The boy’s mother turned to Gandhi and asked, “Why didn’t you tell him that two weeks ago when I brought him here to see you?”

Gandhi smiled—“Mother, two weeks ago I was still eating sugar myself.”

We had to start living, seeing the results of and sharing health and wellness information before we could completely call ourselves Holistic Dentists.

Now that we have made the change to safer and more healthy treatments, have seen the results, and have seen lives change, we are proud to call ourselves Holistic Dentists!
