Tips for Preventing Cavities
At Total Care Dental, we can help ensure that your smile stays perfect and healthy. Filling cavities is a basic part of every dentist’s job description, but there are some things that you can do at home to help prevent them on your own!
For starters, make sure to brush your teeth and floss every day. Tooth enamel can repair itself by using minerals from saliva and fluoride from toothpaste or other sources. I’m not telling you anything here that you don’t already know, but make sure to brush your teeth completely from the gumline, include the tops of your teeth and the backs of them also. Use your toothbrush for about two minutes a day twice daily, spending about thirty seconds in each quadrant of your mouth. An electric toothbrush, with its many settings, might be something to consider also, and your American Fork, UT, dentists can help you decide what’s right for you if you decide to go that route. And don’t forget to floss, which helps rid your mouth of plaque and food that brushing might not get!
In addition to these basics, be careful with what you put into your mouth. Foods with high sugar and starch levels can be harmful to your teeth in the long run. Dark, leafy fruits and vegetables add calcium to your diet and reduce acids in saliva, which works to prevent cavities. While fresh fruits do contain high sugar levels and can be acidic, they can stimulate saliva flow. The extra saliva reduces cavities because it lowers levels of bacteria in the mouth. Foods with lots of Vitamins C & D are also beneficial for good oral health, but check with your doctor before taking any vitamin supplements. Make sure to drink plenty of water, and not just when you’re out hiking or mountain biking! People who get dehydrated also get dry mouths, and that can lead to excessive plaque build-up on your teeth. Watch your coffee and alcohol intake, which can also lead to dry mouth.
There are many simple steps you can take to combat cavities on your own. We are here and happy to help you if you need more prevention tips! Call your American Fork, UT dental office at 801.756.3737!
