There are many ways to address issues that come up with your teeth. Dental bridges, crowns and implants are all reliable ways to improve your smile and oral health, but sometimes it’s confusing to know when each should be used. Your Provo, UT dentists can help clear things up!
A crown is used to cover a damaged tooth. You might need this to replace a filling if there isn’t enough tooth remaining, to restore a fractured tooth, or to cover a poorly shaped tooth, among other reasons. Crowns restore the shape and size of your tooth while improving its strength and appearance. When it’s cemented into place, a crown covers the visible portion of a tooth starting at the gum line. Crowns can be made of stainless steel (generally for children), metal or metal alloys, resin, ceramic or porcelain. Each material has different advantages and we at Total Care Dental will be happy to sort through your options with you!
Dental bridges cover spaces where one or more teeth are missing, literally “bridging the gap” between missing teeth. Bridges are outfitted with replacement teeth (which are made of gold, metal, porcelain, or some combination) and anchored against the existing natural teeth, keeping your smile properly aligned to avoid future problems caused by missing teeth. Ceramic or porcelain bridges can be matched to the color of your teeth, making them less noticeable when you flash your beautiful smile. Your Provo, UT, dentists can make bridges to help restore your smile and maintain the shape of your face by filling in the gaps created by any missing teeth.
Dental implants can come into play if you have gaps in your smile and your teeth aren’t healthy or plentiful enough to support a dental bridge. In this case, a new prosthetic tooth is fixed in place with a steel root. Your gum tissue and jaw accept this new root as if it was your natural tooth, which will look, act and feel just like a normal tooth! Implants can be Endosteal (in the bone) or Subperiosteal (on the bone), depending on your jawbone line and the health of your gums, and your Provo dentists can help determine what’s best for you if pursuing this route. Don’t worry, there is anesthetic used during the procedure. We at Total Care Dental are experts at that; we have all received specialized training to provide you with sedation that will work for you.
