photo-300x225Change is coming! Can you feel it in the air? This is my favorite time of the year. Everything is washed clean and coming to life again. I love looking at the swelling buds on the bushes and trees – knowing that they have survived another long hibernation and are ready to show their beauty and bounty again. The kids want to be outside, 50 degrees feels like a heat wave, and I can’t wait to plant my garden. Yeah, this is a great time of year.

We have been undergoing a change at Total Care Dental too. For a year I have been working with a great business coach, Dave Crenshaw, to help me learn how to more effectively run the business and my life. He’s helped me realize the focus I want to have for Total Care Dental. I’ve always known, but have been unable to put it into words. Thankfully, I got the words from all of you. We looked at the reviews and testimonials you have all written to see what you really love about what we do. It was like a red flashing light it was so clear – you love that we work to make you feel comfortable, that we have fun, and that you actually enjoy your visits to our office. Simple. That’s why I love being there too. I love to help you all have usually enjoyable experiences at Total Care Dental(along with great dentistry!).

So Dave asked me if the office itself was unusually enjoyable. Everyone agreed it was nice, but not unusually enjoyable. So we changed! It will be fun to share our changes with all of you. A fresh spring coat of paint, new upholstery, new faces on the walls and calm, clean decor. We are still working to get everything put back together, but it feels different already. Make sure to check out all the changes – along with our healthy refreshment station added to our signature warm cookies next time you are in.

Now I’m going to show you some behind the scenes shots of Total Care Dental. We really are committed to help all of our patients have an amazing experience, and part of that is not having to wait for your appointment. To be fair, our business is not entirely black and white. Sometimes things come up that we can not predict- we are working with people and every person is different. But for the most part we would like to be ready for you within five minutes of your appointment time. We have not been perfect at this, and sometimes we simply stink. So as a fresh spring start, we have analyzed what we can do to improve for you.

This is the part I want to teach you (thanks Dave). When something is not going as you would like it to, we all respond in one of three ways. First – we can focus internally – we run late because I really stink at it, or Cinda stinks or Julie… Or we can focus externally – we run late because the entire dental industry does and there is nothing we can do about it. Or we can focus on the system – we run late because we do not have an effective system to help us. The only way we should look at a problem is the third.

So we are working on our system – how we schedule, when we schedule different procedures, and how we stay on time during our day. I shared this with you for a couple of reasons – if we change the way we schedule your next appointment, please know it is because we completely respect your time, and don’t want to make you wait any more. And second, I think it’s a great way to approach any problem. For example…

We were having a difficult time getting laundry folded at our home. I could have blamed myself, or my husband, or my kids (internal), but that doesn’t fix anything. I could have said that’s just what happens in a home where mom works, and there was nothing we could do about it(external). Thankfully I knew Dave’s method, so we worked on the system instead. Now I wash all the clothes on Friday and put them in laundry baskets when they are done. Every person is then responsible for folding one basket of laundry on Friday or Saturday. The little kids don’t fold so well (okay, they are pretty bad at it!), but I don’t complain. They all do it, the laundry is done and put away by the end of the weekend, and the entire family benefits from the system. Give this process it a try. It sure beats blaming yourself or everyone else when something isn’t working the way you would like!

What would you like to freshen up for spring? Set your sights on one thing so you can succeed. Maybe this is the year for a garden, to plant an apple tree, to get a swingset for the kids or to clean up a bit. Whatever it is, use this contagious spring energy to get it done.
