It seems that everyone is talking about health these days. There’s the South Beach Diet, the Paleo Diet, the Atkins Diet, the ABC Diet (I just made that one up!)… You can do Crossfit or Yoga, run a 5K or a marathon. There are so many ways to improve our health. So it’s made me think – why are we so UNhealthy??
We hosted a great class last week with Karen Urbanek called “Never be Sick Again!” Now, that’s a pretty lofty claim, and I was a bit nervous hosting the class for fear it wouldn’t be what people really want to hear. We shared the night with about 100 of you, and the response was (drum roll) – you liked what she had to say and want to learn more! Karen is pretty hard hitting, and most likely every person in that room is eating or doing something she recommended not to do. What that tells me is that we are all in the same club. We can support each other in getting healthy.
She started out by explaining our bodies and how they work. Under this skin, we have AMAZING machines, working 24/7 for us. Those machines need fuel. Where do we get that fuel? We EAT IT! So if we eat better fuel (food), our bodies perform better for us. Part of performing better is not getting sick. And she isn’t talking about just a common cold. She is talking about not getting heart disease, diabetes, not having tooth decay and even avoiding cancer. Yeah, that’s something I’m interesting in learning about!
So what food is good fuel for our bodies? This email could be pages and pages long before I really even touched the surface of this one, so I’m going to pick my favorite one to start with – because it has a lot to do with teeth. Did you know your teeth are the hardest substance in your body?? It’s true! More and more I see the effect of acid on teeth. You probably know about cavities, but do you know that teeth can actually erode away from acid. No cavity – the tooth just dissolves. So if something can eat your tooth away or cause it to decay, imagine what it’s doing to your soft insides.
Some foods are acidic in your bodies and some foods are alkaline. The more acid causing foods you eat, the sicker you get. It’s proven – your body just can’t deal with all the acidity. You store fat trying to protect your body from the acid, your gut is a mess, your teeth dissolve away and the minerals get sucked out of your bones leading to osteoporosis. That sounds bad!! And it is. Put it on your fridge and try to pick from the foods on the alkaline side. It will do your body good!
This is barely even the start of the acid/alkaline talk, so do some research. This is how my husband dropped fifteen pounds without dieting or exercise. It’s how his chronic headaches went away. This is why my gut feels better than it has in twenty years. Let me know what you learn!

Simple Everyday Green Smoothie
1/3 of your blender filled with water (3-4 C)
1/3 of blender filled with spinach (2-3 big handfuls)
Blend this up together
Add 1 banana, 1 apple and frozen fruit to fill blender
Add agave to taste if you need it a bit sweeter.
Pour into a glass and enjoy!
(I drink 32 oz. of this each morning)
Pop 1/2 C popcorn in air popper
Pop into large bowl.
Drizzle 1/4 C melted coconut oil over top after popping
Add 1/4 C Nutritional Yeast* a little at a time while stirring around.
Add 1 t salt to taste and stir.
*Nutritional yeast is not the kind you use for bread making. It is in flakes and is actually very good for you. In fact, it’s a great source of protein and it tastes like cheese! You can get it in bulk at health food stores.
PS THANK YOU for coming to the wonderful “Never Be Sick Again” workshop we had last night! We had a great time and we hope you did too!
