Residents in the Pleasant Grove, Utah area get tempted by chocolate, some by ice cream…I get tempted by seed catalogs. I don’t even think there is a 12 step program for the addiction I have! A patient fed my addiction a few weeks ago. She brought the Baker Creek Seed Company’s Whole Seed Catalog in for me to drool over. I knew I had to have one from the moment I laid eyes on it!
Mine came in the mail last week, and I was so busy, three days went by before I had time to look at it. It felt like a lifetime… But this Sunday proved to be the perfect day. Super Bowl Sunday in the Pleasant Grove area! My entire family on the couch for a couple of hours. I was able to read every single page of the catalog during the game – what an amazing few hours! (And I do know who won – all I had to do was listen to who was yelling and who was cheering in the room to figure that one out!)
I don’t know what my addiction is from. I was sitting next to my mom during the game, and occasionally when I saw something particularly spectacular I would show it to her. No excitement at all. Didn’t get it from her! Wherever it comes from, it is the perfect addiction to get me through a long, cold, dreary winter.
Just when there is nothing but white and cold outside, I crack the pages of a seed catalog and see all the beauty and bounty summer will bring near Pleasant Grove this year. It reminds me of the miracle of spring and how I love to see things come to life.
Oranges and lemons and limes, Oh my!
I do have greens growing in my cold frames and greenhouse right now, but not much else is alive – here in the Pleasant Grove, Utah area. In other more temperate areas there is wonderful winter medicine growing. I’m talking about citrus fruits. Now is their season and their timing is perfect.
Citrus fruits are full of Vitamin C. Vitamin C is particularly useful for building the immune system. It’s also helps prevent scurvy. If you paid attention in your history lessons, you will remember sailors were particularly prone to scurvy. The scurvy was due to a lack of fresh food and Vitamin C. Scurvy causes bleeding gums, loose teeth and weak bones. Wanting to stop scurvy, British sailors started bringing lemons and limes to eat on their sea voyages. Scurvy gone, and they were the healthiest sailors around.
Eat oranges to stop bleeding gums
So if a sign of scurvy is bleeding gums, and scurvy is caused by Vitamin C deficiency, you can connect the dots and see that getting enough Vitamin C as a resident near Pleasant Grove, UT can help bleeding gums. This is true!
We care about bleeding gums in our practice because they are an indicator of other, bigger issues. Research has shown gum disease to be directly correlated to heart issues, kidney problems, even premature births. It’s not something we want to mess around with. So we recommend Vitamin C for everyone living near Pleasant Grove, especially if you have gum problems.
What exactly does Vitamin C do for our gums? Well, Vitamin C is needed to produce collagen, and collagen builds the structure of our bodies. Collagen is the framework for our skin, gums and bones, and without it, we would quite literally fall apart. Luckily, it doesn’t take much vitamin C to prevent this problem.
So should you load up on those big Vitamin C tablets your grandma made you chew? No! Those are synthetic. Get your Vitamin C from food, where nature intended us to get all we need.
Vitamin C from FOOD
Where can you find Vitamin C? Citrus fruits—oranges, limes, lemons and grapefruit. Papaya, strawberries, pineapple, kiwi, cantaloupe, and raspberries are also excellent.
Some other good sources are cranberries, blueberries, and watermelon, leafy greens, cruciferous vegetable, summer and winter squash, green beans, and carrots. Enjoy taking your vitamins- your gums will love you for it!
So load up on winter’s medicine and enjoy those fresh oranges, grapefruit, lemons and limes while the snow flies and everything sleeps here near Pleasant Grove, Utah. You can find me on the couch looking at seed catalogs. Want to join me?!
